How Veteran PTSD & Substance Abuse are Connected:
PTSD and substance use disorders (SUD), often co-occur among veterans, create a complex cycle of symptoms that exacerbate each other. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs in their publication "Understanding PTSD and Substance Use" (May 2019), nearly one out of every three veterans seeking treatment for SUD also has PTSD, and more than one in four veterans with PTSD also has SUD. The connection between these conditions arises because some veterans try to cope with their PTSD symptoms by using substances like alcohol, drugs, or tobacco. This substance use can develop into a disorder, further complicating the veteran's mental health and recovery process.
Veterans And Trauma-Informed Treatment
A trauma-informed approach begins with taking extra care to avoid re-traumatizing veterans by having an understanding of their unique triggers and sensitivities. PTSD and substance use disorders are prevalent in veterans as a result of their military service, whether or not they were directly engaged in combat. It takes time to build trust with someone who has been traumatized, and healing can only take place in a non-judgemental, soothing environment. The goal of trauma-informed treatment is to put each person at ease by making sure they feel safe, comfortable, and cared for. Accomplishing this requires taking a detailed patient history and using a flexible approach with a combination of modalities to see what works best for the individual.
Veterans And The 8 Dimensions Of Wellness
Because many veterans struggle with co-occurring mental health issues and substance use disorders, they can benefit from an integrative approach that addresses both issues at the same time. At Nestled Recovery, we take this approach a step further, addressing a person’s physical, mental, and spiritual needs with a combination of traditional and experiential therapies that address the roots of both disorders from a holistic perspective.
Using the Eight Dimensions of Wellness as a framework for healing, chances for long-term recovery are greatly improved as veterans learn and develop new tools for life that they can take with them once they graduate from any of our recovery programs.
The Eight Dimensions of Wellness are: Physical, Spiritual, Mental, Emotional, Social, Occupational, Financial, and Environmental. Although each dimension is important, veterans in particular can benefit from assistance with the occupational, environmental, and financial aspects of their lives. Many veterans struggle with unemployment, isolation, and civilian life in general, and may find that they require more support in these areas than their families or local VA facilities can offer.
